July 2, 2009--Photonic solutions provider Newport Corporation (Irvine, CA) announced that the Photovoltaic Laboratory of its Technology and Applications Center (TAC-PV Lab), located in Irvine, was accredited to the highest international standard for calibration labs by the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard (see also "Measuring the 'sun'").

Newport's TAC-PV Lab measures and provides calibration data for the electrical performance of photovoltaic cells. It is one of only a few labs in the world that are accredited to perform these types of measurements on PV cells. The Newport TAC-PV lab can calibrate and characterize multiple types of commercial and prototype PV devices. The lab offers quick turnaround time and can also accommodate requests for special expedited service. Newport recently announced an incentive rewards program to stretch a customer's budget.

Matt O'Donnell, TAC-PV lab manager, said, "We are very excited to offer solar cell characterization services for the rapidly growing photovoltaic market. We look forward to collaborating with the market leaders in solar energy development and continuing our support of the research community. Newport's new TAC-PV Lab will facilitate the development and production of more efficient PV devices."

The new lab complements the company's Industrial Applications Lab in Mountain View, CA, and its Photovoltaic Applications Lab in Stahnsdorf, Germany, which are dedicated to increasing the efficiency and lowering the cost of manufacturing photovoltaic panels.
