OmniVision announces new CIF and VGA CMOS image sensors

Sept. 10, 2001
OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA), has introduced four new image sensors designed for mobile applications such as cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other handheld electronic devices. The new CIF (352 x 288) and VGA (640 x 480) products are the latest in a series of new sensors designed for applications requiring small size and low power consumption, two of the most critical features for handheld, battery operated electronic devices

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA), has introduced four new image sensors designed for mobile applications such as cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other handheld electronic devices. The new CIF (352 x 288) and VGA (640 x 480) products are the latest in a series of new sensors designed for applications requiring small size and low power consumption, two of the most critical features for handheld, battery operated electronic devices.

New products include two CIF-resolution sensors and two VGA-resolution sensors. All four operate on 3.3 volts. At 30 frames/s operation, the hurdle for smooth motion video, the power consumption of the CIF products is less than 45 milliwatts, while the VGA products consume fewer than 60 milliwatts. Power consumption in suspend mode is only 30 microwatts.

The CIF OV6640/OV6645 offerings use a 1/5-inch format lens while the VGA OV7630/OV7635 products use a 1/4-inch format lens. The CIF OV6640 and the VGA OV7630 come in a 28-pin package with a total area size of 11.4 mm x 11.4 mm. The CIF OV6645 and the VGA OV7635 are smaller in size and come in a 24-pin package with a total area size of 10 mm x 10 mm.

In OEM quantities, the CIF OV6640 and OV6645 are priced at $5.50 and $6.00 respectively. The VGA OV7630 and OV7635 are priced at $6.50 and $7.00 respectively. Production versions of all four image sensors are immediately available to qualified OEMs for sampling.
