Ottawa, ON, Canada and Marietta, GA--Optelian, a designer and manufacturer of optical transport systems, announced the promotion of Sheldon Walklin to the position of chief technology officer (CTO). Previously, Walklin served as the company’s director of systems architecture. He joined Optelian in 2006. In his new role, Walklin will oversee key aspects of Optelian’s research and development activities and provide long-term vision and strategy at the executive level of the corporation.

Walklin has more than 15 years experience in optical communications, ten years as a senior designer in product development and five years in an industry-focused research environment. He has extensive system-level design and management experience in wireless and optical communications. Prior to joining Optelian, he worked at both small and large technology companies, including Nortel, Research In Motion, Innovance Networks, and Metconnex.

"Optelian is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Walklin's caliber, standing and integrity assume the role of Chief Technology Officer. His firm grasp of opto-electronic technologies and trends will continue to be of immense value to the company as well as its customers," said Mike Perry, president of Optelian.

Walklin received a B.Sc. with Distinction in Electrical Engineering in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1997 from the University of Alberta. His Ph.D. research was conducted at Telecommunications Research Laboratories in Edmonton, Alberta, where he pioneered theoretical and experimental work on multilevel signaling in high-speed lightwave systems. Dr. Walklin is also a member of the IEEE Communications Society, Photonics Society and CREATE Program Committee for Next Generation Optical Networks.
