Santa Clara, CA, October 7, 2002 -- Coherent, Inc. is shipping production units of its Sapphire 488-200 laser - a 200-mW, solid-state, 488-nm system. The recently released Sapphire 488-200 is the latest in a family of solid-state lasers based on Coherent's exclusive optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL() technology. The Sapphire 488-200 has been specifically designed for integration into analytical instrumentation, such as flow cytometers and fluorescent imagers for drug discovery, as well as for semiconductor metrology tools.

"Our first-generation Sapphire lasers, released in a 20-mW version, enabled analytical instruments of all kinds, as manufacturers were able to realize performance enhancements and size reduction compared to existing ion laser technology. At this higher 200 mW output level, however, we have really changed the landscape in instrument markets, because photon-hungry applications can now enjoy faster analysis speeds, enhanced dynamic range, and increased signal-to-noise ratios," said Matthias Schulze, product manager for the Sapphire product line.

Colorado-based, high-performance flow cytometer manufacturer, DakoCytomation, is the first company to deliver end-user products that include the Sapphire 488-200. "Working in close partnership with Coherent to incorporate the Sapphire 488-200 into our instruments, we were able to design the first all-solid-state flow cytometer," said John Sharpe, director of engineering for DakoCytomation's flow cytometry group. "In fact, the Sapphire's unparalleled size/power ratio, robustness, and very low heat dissipation allowed us to give our customers a revolutionary platform-in size, simplicity of user requirements, and outright horsepower."
