High-performance supercontinuum fiber lasers by Fianium

Jan. 21, 2009
Fianium's (Southampton, England) new supercontinuum (SC) fiber lasers are based on the company's proprietary high-performance photonic crystal fiber (PCF) design. The SC lasers based offer true white spectrum covering the entire 390-2400nm band. Plus, they offer greater power in the visible 400-700nm part of the spectrum compared to lasers based on conventional PCF enabling wavelength tunability with enhanced spectral brightness.

The new lasers have a number of advantages over conventional SC fiber lasers including stability and uncompromised performance (no degradation) over time. Fianium has now developed a new patent-pending technique for fabricating such fibers in volume. Because of its simplicity, Fianium's method of pulling fiber is also less expensive than conventional techniques.

Fianium previews new high performance supercontinuum fibre lasers at Photonics West 2009

Patent pending fibre secures continuity of high-quality supply and helps Fianium to extend its market and technology leadership

Southampton, UK, 12th January 2009 - Ultrafast fibre laser manufacturer, Fianium has developed a new supercontinuum (SC) fibre laser based on its proprietary high performance photonic crystal fibre (PCF) design. Supercontinuum fibre lasers utilising Fianium's superior PCF design will be rolled out during 2009 as the company seeks to extend its market and technology leadership in supercontinuum fibre lasers. Fianium's lasers can be previewed on booth 6225 at Photonics West 2009 and booth 8132 at BIOS 2009 in San Jose, USA between the 24th and 29th January 2009.

In 2008, in partnership with the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials at the University of Bath, Fianium developed a new type of PCF enabling superior performance SC fibre lasers. SC lasers based on Fianium's PCF design offer true white spectrum covering the entire 390-2400nm band. They also deliver greater power in the visible 400-700nm part of the spectrum, compared to lasers based on conventional PCF enabling wavelength tunability with enhanced spectral brightness. Fianium has now developed a new patent-pending technique for fabricating such fibres in volume.

The new supercontinuum fibre lasers have a number of advantages over conventional SC fiber lasers including their stability and because there is no performance degradation over time. Because of its simplicity, Fianium's method of pulling fibre is also less expensive than conventional techniques.

Anatoly Grudinin, CEO at Fianium commented: "Our high performance PCF design is evidence of Fianium's technical superiority, which has evolved through the team's 100 plus years of combined experience working with the world's best universities and professors at the forefront of ultrafast fibre lasers. Supercontinuum fibre lasers built using our high performance PCF design and fabrication method offer customers the advanced technology edge with which to push the boundaries of scientific discovery. Our fabrication method ensures high quality continuity of supply as we extend our technology and market leadership moving forward."
