Abbott Medical Optics' (AMO; Abbott Park, IL) iFS advanced femtosecond laser has received FDA clearance to create bow-shaped or curved arcuate incisions in corneal surgery, including cataract surgery.
Currently used to create LASIK flaps and other corneal incisions in the eye, the laser is the fifth generation of the company's IntraLase technology, which has been used in more than 5 million procedures worldwide. With the new clearance, the laser enables precise, bladeless arcuate incisions during surgery and customizes the incision for each individual patient.
Studies show that the laser creates arcuate incisions safely and effectively as prescribed by the physician, and complies with applicable safety standards.
The new utility for the laser is available now in the United States.
