WaveTec Vision has closed a new round of financing for its recently introduced ORA System, a wavefront aberrometry system for cataract surgery, securing an additional $16.5 million.

WaveTec Vision (Aliso Viejo, CA) has closed a new round of financing for its recently introduced ORA System, a wavefront aberrometry system for cataract surgery, securing an additional $16.5 million.

The financing further validates the scientific and clinical potential of the system, says Tom Frinzi, WaveTec president and CEO. It also enables the company to further expand the system's commercial efforts, he says.

The system utilizes the company's Optiwave technology with a superluminescent light-emitting diode (SLED) light source and precision lenses. The system's optimized algorithms help improve the accuracy of intraoperative refractive measurement, according to the company, while a system-aligned, on-demand reticle guides intraoperative astigmatic correction to provide axial guidance for use during toric lens and limbal relaxing incision (LRI) placement. And the system's full field of view includes a live display of the eye to visually confirm quality captures.

The system's latest round of financing was led by a new investor, Burrill & Company (San Francisco, CA). All of the company's previous investors also participated in this round of financing, including Versant Ventures, Accuitive Medical Ventures, De Novo Ventures, and Gund Investment Corporation.
