April 4, 2008, Norcross, GA--The Pennsylvania State Police has reaffirmed its long-time commitment to 3D laser scanning for forensic mapping by awarding a new contract to Leica Geosystems that will result in the department's deployment of three Leica ScanStation 2 laser scanners throughout Pennsylvania. The Leica ScanStation 2 can be used for forensic mapping at crash and homicide scenes, officer involved shootings, and bomb/arson investigations, all of which support the department's homeland security mission.

The Pennsylvania State Police was the first police agency in the United States to deploy Leica's cutting-edge 3D laser scanning technology, first purchasing two Leica 3D laser scanners in 2004. Other police agencies including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Albuquerque Police Department and the California Highway Patrol (which has deployed six Leica systems throughout California) have followed Pennsylvania's lead.

"The fact that the Pennsylvania State Police have turned to Leica Geosystems again for still more of our laser scanning technology is a testimony to the value the organization places on our equipment to help support its investigative operations," said Tony Grissim, Forensic Account Manager for Leica Geosystems. "With examples such as this, we're continuing to build on our new forensic web site at http://www.leica-geosystems.com/us/forensic, which features several videos and case studies designed to help educate public safety officials around the world as to the value of Leica 3D laser scanning."
