Fractional lasers best, says study presented at dermatology meeting

Nov. 11, 2008
NOVEMBER 10, 2008 -- Reliant Technologies (Mountain View, CA) presented study results comparing fractional laser technology to pseudo fractional lasers during last week's American Society for Dermatologic Surgery meeting. The data demonstrates that "true" fractional systems provide superior safety and efficacy compared to those that use altered ablative technology. The lasers are used for for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation on the face, eyelids, the neck, and hands, as well as on scars.

NOVEMBER 10, 2008 -- Reliant Technologies Inc. (Mountain View, CA), pioneer of fractional skin resurfacing, presented study results comparing fractional laser technology to pseudo fractional laser technology during the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) annual meeting last Friday (November 7 in Orlando, FL). The data indicates that fractional laser systems, including Reliant's Fraxel re:store and Fraxel re:pair lasers, provide superior safety and efficacy as compared to pseudo fractional laser systems, which use altered ablative lasers. The data was presented during a scientific session titled, "You Asked for It. You Got it," which was designed to cover current trends and issues chosen by ASDS members.

The results presented derive from a review of previously published clinical papers and anecdotal patient data of nearly 800 treatments using true fractional and pseudo fractional laser systems.

"The Fraxel re:store and Fraxel re:pair lasers are true fractional laser technologies that have overcome the limits of traditional ablative laser skin resurfacing and pseudo fractional laser technologies with their ability to safely and effectively treat patients both on and off the face as well as those of all skin types," said Vic Narurkar, M.D., founder of the Bay Area Laser Institute. "Unlike pseudo fractional laser technologies, the Fraxel re:store and Fraxel re:pair lasers provide precise fractional delivery and superior skin resurfacing results for patients, all with minimal downtime and risk."

Reliant's systems were also featured in seven other presentations at the ASDS event, including sessions discussing eyelid rejuvenation, scar revision, neck rejuvenation and tightening, hand rejuvenation, and various discussions and comparisons of technologies.
Recently, it was announced that Reliant has agreed to join forces with Thermage, Inc. (NASDAQ:THRM) in a merger expected to close in the 4th quarter 2008.
