A line of single-photon counting modules from Excelitas Technologies (Waltham, MA) meets the low-light-level analytical detection demands of confocal microscopy, fluorescence, luminescence, and time-correlated single-photon counting. The modules offer photon-counting performance in parameters like high photon-detection efficiency, low afterpulsing, high uniformity over an active area, high linear dynamic range, and low dark counts. They feature an avalanche photodiode that operates in Geiger mode to allow a single incoming photon to trigger an avalanche of electrons already large enough to be detected and counted as an electronic pulse. Also, a silicon avalanche photodiode with a circular active area is intended for peak photon detection efficiency.
