Mobius Photonics develops "Meight" power-delivery optical-fiber connector

Mobius Photonics has developed a detachable optical-fiber connector designed for power applications such as pump-light delivery and fiber coupling in commercial and industrial lasers.

Mountain View, CA--Mobius Photonics, a maker of short-pulsed IR, green, and UV fiber-laser sources, has developed what it calls the "Meight" connector--a detachable optical-fiber connector designed for power applications such as pump-light delivery and fiber coupling in commercial and industrial lasers. Meight connectors can handle up to a few hundred watts of power via multimode fibers with core diameters from 50 microns to 1 mm.

"We've engineered a design that combines high power delivery with simple, repeatable insertion and extraction capabilities, and is compatible with a sealed-bulkhead laser design," said Red Byer, Mobius vice president of operations. "Through licensing, we plan to introduce Meight connectors to the market, ultimately giving laser makers a new option in performance from an optical-power connector."

Meight connectors are keyed to ensure consistent coupling: a large-thread hex nut guides and fastens the connector in place to ensure a secure mechanical connection. The connectors can be used to fiber-couple through a sealed bulkhead and can be decoupled without breaking the bulkhead seal. Bulkhead interfaces are available to connect Meight to Meight, Meight to SMA, as well as launch between Meight and free space.
