Nufern gets award from U.S. Navy to supply optical fiber to modernize the Trident Missile Guidance System
East Granby, CT--Nufern has been selected as the lead optical-fiber supplier supporting the modernization and life-extension of the U.S. Navy's Trident Missile Guidance System.
Nufern, which produces optical fibers, optical-fiber gyroscope coils, and fiber lasers and amplifiers, has been supplying the fiber for the U.S. Navy program since March 2009. The company has now been awarded a multimillion dollar "Life of Type Buy" (LOTB) contract to supply several thousand kilometers of fiber through July 2013.
Nufern has worked with the prime contractors for modernization of the Trident Guidance System--Draper Laboratory (Cambridge, MA) and its inertial sensor subcontractor, Honeywell (Phoenix, AZ)--to develop cost-effective and high-performance optical fibers for fiber-optic gyroscopes.
Mansoor Alam, Nufern's Trident Fiber program manager, noted that the award of the contract is the largest single award in Nufern's decade-old history.
