3S PHOTONICS has introduced the 2000 CHP Series of 980 nm single-mode pump modules for telecom applications, which delivers up to 820 mW ex-fiber output power with unparalleled reliability levels and stable performance, while keeping low operating currents.

3S Photonics has introduced the 2000 CHP Series of 980 nm single-mode pump modules for telecom applications at OFC/NFOEC this week. The modules delivers up to 820 mW ex-fiber output power with unparalleled reliability levels and stable performance, while keeping low operating currents. The pump module incorporates a new GaAs laser chip using 3S Photonics' submarine-qualified technology, which enables more output power with similar levels of operating current and reliability. The laser chip is packaged in a hermetically sealed 14-pin cooled butterfly package and wavelength locked by a fiber Bragg grating integrated into the fiber pigtail. The resulting 2000 CHP module offers stable performance over a wide dynamic range.

PRESS RELEASE

3S PHOTONICS introduces the world's most powerful
980nm pump modules for next-generation optical amplifiers

3S PHOTONICS, the world leading manufacturer of InP and GaAs laser chips, optical discrete modules and components for telecommunication networks, will unveil the launch of the industry's most powerful 980nm pump laser module, capable of delivering up to 820mW of power for network amplifier applications, at OFC/NFOEC in San Diego, March 24-26.

The recognized leader for submarine pump laser modules, 3S PHOTONICS, leverages its technological expertise in building a new generation of ultra-high power pumps for terrestrial applications that will form the cornerstone for Next-Generation Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs).

The new modules from 3S PHOTONICS' 2000 CHP Series, the world's most powerful 980nm single-mode pump modules product family available for telecom applications, can deliver up to 820mW ex-fiber output power with unparalleled reliability levels and stable performances, while keeping low operating currents.

The 2000 CHP modules represent a significant step forward for the design of Next-Generation network amplifiers by enabling higher output power for EDFAs, reducing component count and lowering cost and power dissipation, while allowing extended spans and an improved noise figure performance.

The pump module incorporates a new GaAs laser chip using the 3S PHOTONICS submarine qualified technology, the proprietary design of which enabling to get more output power with similar levels of operating current and reliability. This laser chip, made in 3S PHOTONICS Nozay is packaged in an industry standard hermetically sealed 14-pin cooled butterfly package and wavelength locked by a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) integrated into the fiber pigtail. The resulting 2000 CHP module offers stable performance over a wide dynamic range.

"The new 2000 CHP Series pump modules represent a technological breakthrough and will likely be key components for the Next-Generation of powerful and cost effective EDFAs which require highly reliable pump lasers with ultra-high output powers to support the increasing technical requirements and constraints of optical networks" explained Yannick Bailly, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management for 3S PHOTONICS. "Ultra-high power pumps also enable a significant cost reduction in "existing/legacy" EDFA designs where the quantity of pumps can be reduced"

The 820mW 2000 CHP is RoHS and compliant to Telcordia GR-468-CORE requirements. Product is already available for customer samples and will reach full qualification by the end of June 09.
