January 18, 2008, Montreal, QC, Canada--IRphotonics, a provider of infrared (IR) fiber and materials, has achieved the lowest reported attenuation for a commercial-grade multimode IR optical fiber. This technological achievement represents a significant milestone toward the company's goal of enabling next-generation IR optical systems for medical, defense, and spectroscopy applications.

Daniel Lacroix, VP operations of IRphotonics, said, "A customer requested a long ultra-low loss fiber with less than 3 dB/km attenuation at 3.0 µm for a remote spectroscopy application in the chemical processing industry. Our detailed understanding of IR glasses and optical fibers as well as our unique manufacturing process allowed us to achieve these very rigorous specifications. It is a major step forward for the whole industry."

IRphotonics has developed a patented manufacturing process for the production of high-quality fluoride glasses and fluoride fibers that have a high transparency in the IR region of the optical spectrum.
