Abingdon England—Laser processing solutions provider OpTek Systems has won The Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade. The company provides equipment and services for precision laser processing and micromachining across a wide range of applications and industrial sectors.

The award is announced as OpTek Systems celebrates completion of its tenth year of trading with a third consecutive year of record revenues in 2010—this despite the turbulent economic climate of the recent past.

The company’s impressive performance resulted from increased demand for machine tools used in the manufacturing and testing of PV (photovoltaic) cells in both the USA and Asia. This was augmented in 2010 by a significant uptake in Optek’s
LaserCleave range of products for processing optical fibers for applications in FTTH (fiber to the home) and AOC (active optical cable) mainly in Asia, but also in Europe and North America.

In combination with OpTek’s traditional micromachining operations, these markets have pushed exports to more than 80% of sales.

Founder and Technical Director Dr Mike Osborne said “I am very proud that since its formation in 2000 OpTek has now reported 10 consecutive years of profitable operation, and has expanded its facilities from the UK to include manufacturing sites in USA and Asia. It is a great honor for our efforts to be recognized with this prestigious award, which has been achieved thanks to the hard work and dedication of all our staff and partners .”

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious corporate awards that any UK business can win. These independent awards are given for five years in the categories of International Trade, Innovation, and Sustainable Development and show how successful the business is and are an esteemed form of approval.

To be awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the category of International Trade, a company must show a substantial and sustained increase in export earnings over three consecutive 12-month periods, to a level that is outstanding for the products and services concerned, and for the size of the organization. Awards are made on the advice of the Prime Minister after examination of applications by an Advisory Committee composed of leading individuals from industry, commerce, trade unions and government. The awards are conferred by the reigning British monarch on their birthday every year. For Elizabeth II this is 21 April.
