Lightconnect, a supplier of diffractive MEMS-based dynamic components for the optical network market, announced that its Dynamic Gain Equalizer is now optimized for either C- or L-Band operation. The product, first announced last July, had previously operated only in the C-Band. The device is now customer configurable for a range of 40 nm in either C- or L-Band, in response to needs in the long haul and ultra long haul network transport markets for dynamic optical networks.
"The ability to perform gain equalization in the L-band, in addition to the C-band, is a critical requirement for our customers that are building next generation WDM amplifiers," said Asif Godil, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Lightconnect. "By integrating such capability, amplifier systems can now perform dynamic attenuation and gain flattening functions optimized for the L-band and take advantage of the expanded wavelength range."
Dynamic Gain Equalizers (DGEs) are a significant new family of components that control and adjust optical power in different spectral bands. DGEs are especially powerful in their ability to dynamically compensate for the spectral non-uniformity of EDFA or Raman optical amplifiers. The L-Band Dynamic Gain Equalizer is currently shipping in sample quantities, with volume production ramps in the first quarter of 2002.
