Fusion splicer

May 1, 1995
Programmable fiberoptic fusion splicer, Fusion 2000, automatically aligns, gaps, and fuses fibers in 35 s. The unit combines the low loss and accurate loss estimation of a local-injection-and-detection splicer with a profile-alignment-system splicer?s ability to splice all standard colors of coatings. Average splice loss is less than 0.02 dB on single-mode fiber, position resolution is 0.05 ?m, and the device estimates extrinsic splice loss within ?0.02 dB 90% of the time.
