Corning to invest $100 million to meet surging fiber demand
To meet the increasing worldwide demand for optical fiber and fiberoptic cable, Corning Incorporated (Corning, NY) is investing $100 million to upgrade its Wilmington, NC, facility. Combined with the $150 million expansion announced in early 1995, the planned improvements will increase Corning`s fiber-production capabilities by more than 75% over the next three years. Initial work will focus on process improvement, but subsequent installation of new equipment or upgrades to existing equipment are expected to cause significant output increases by 1997. The Corning Telecommunications Products division was recently awarded the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award for excellence in quality management in the large-manufacturing-company category.
