According to a market analysis by ElectroniCast (San Mateo, CA), the annual North American consumption of fiberoptic attenuators will grow from $21.5 million in 1993 to $43.7 million in 1998 and increase further to $80.8 million by 2003. The telecommunications industry consumed 77% of the attenuators in 1993, but projections indicate a decline in share to 74.8% by 1998 and 68.4% by 2003. The corresponding dollar market share, however, will grow from $16.52 million to $32.67 million by 1998 and to $55.29 million by 2003. "The fastest-growing application will be military/aerospace, rising from a 10% [$4.25 million] share in 1998 to 13% [$10.2 million] in 2003," said ElectroniCast chairman Jeff Montgomery.
