The Laser Institute of America (Orlando, FL), secretariat and publisher of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z136 series of laser-safety standards, has released the newly revised ANSI Z136.2-1997 Safe Use of Optical Fiber Communication Systems Utilizing Laser Diode and LED Sources. Changes in the standard address the dramatic increase in fiber systems during the past several years, including the extreme power levels being pumped into fiberoptic cables.
