New laser module reduces cost of WDM by one-third

Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Grou¥(Murray Hill, NJ) developed an enhanced laser module that nearly doubles the transmission distance capability of lightwave communication systems without the use of regenerators. The device can transmit across spans of u¥to 1000 km, setting a new industry benchmark. The increased transmission distance will reduce the cost of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) systems by about one-third, according to the company. Samples will be offered within

Samples will be offered within the first quarter of next year. Volume production is expected in the third quarter of 1998.

In other news, Lucent claims to offer the first lifetime warranty on optoelectronic components for fiberoptic communications. The warranty covers the E2500 series of electro-absorptive modulated isolated laser modules and the D2300 and D2500 series of digital isolated laser modules.
