The Massachusetts state government has awarded a $1 million contract to Northern Telecom (Nortel, St. Laurent, Quebec) to supply fiberoptic carrier and asynchronous-transfer-mode digital switch equipment for the Massachusetts Information Turnpike Initiative, a statewide telecommunications network designed to support university and commonwealth operations. The University of Massachusetts-managed system will consist of a 125-mile network running along the Massachusetts Turnpike. Power-ready equipment shelters and the optical fiber itself were deployed by the Turnpike Authority in the past; Nortel will supply the additional components required to bring the system on-line later this year.
