Erbium-fiber laser

An erbium-doped fiber laser, the ErF, produces pulses shorter than 100 fs long at 1.55 µm and can produce average powers of more than 50 mW in a diffraction-limited beam. The laser is pumped by semiconductor lasers, which allow it to run on 110 V ac. The laser is housed in a 12 ¥ 24-in. package. Related product, SErF, includes a frequency doubler in the same package, which allows the laser to be used for seeding Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifiers at their gain peak.
