If all options are exercised, the contract will be worth more than $20 million. Building on technology developed for the commercial marketplace, UT¥will produce an externally modulated, continuous-wave distributed-feedback laser operating at 1550 nm to launch broadband signals into optical fiber. As many as 1000 systems will be produced over the open-ended program; initial deliveries are slated for mid-1997.
