AMP Inc. (Harrisburg, PA) has announced three collaborative agreements toward developing standardized components for fiberoptic communications. AMP entered a multisource agreement establishing internationally compatible sources for a small-footprint fiberoptic transceiver with Hewlett-Packard (HP; Palo Alto, CA), Lucent Technologies (Holmdel, NJ), Northern Telecom (Paignton, England), Siemens (Berlin, Germany), and Sumitomo (Osaka and Tokyo, Japan). AMP, HP, Siecor (Hickory, NC), US Conec (Hickory, NC), and Fujikara (Tokyo, Japan) also announced the availability of a connector system for use with the small-footprint transceiver. According to a third agreement between AMP and Siemens announced during the Optical Fiber Communications conference (San Jose, CA, Feb. 22-27), the two companies will supply parallel transmission and receiver modules designed to be interchangeable at the printed-circuit-board level.
