    Corning Incorporated (Corning, NY) will be the exclusive optical-fiber sponsor of Project Oxygen, the global underwater fiberoptic network being built by CRT Grou¥Ltd. (Woodcliff Lake, NJ). Corning will supply nonzero-dispersion-shifted fibers, optimized for very high capacity and long distance. The first phase of the Oxygen network is expected to cost $8 billion and be in place by 2002. It will consist of 158,000 km of fiberoptic cable connecting 74 countries, with a minimum capacity of 640
