Nortel ups production volume of fiberoptic components, changes name
At its Paignton (Devon, England) headquarters, Nortel Optoelectronics has opened a manufacturing center for volume production of fiberoptic passive and amplifier products. Total optoelectronics manufacturing space now exceeds 54,000 sq ft. The company expects the passive and amplifier markets to grow by 30% and 35% a year, respectively. With a new logo, Nortel has renamed itself Nortel Networks, reflecting its merger with Bay Networks and its focus on unified network solutions. A global advertising and communications campaign will carry the message about the change, although the legal name will remain Northern Telecom Limited.
