Endoscopy - Improved image quality through polarization control

Endoscopy is widely used in medical diagnostics and minimally invasive procedures to visualize internal organs and tissues. The optical system of an endoscope typically consists of illumination optics, an imaging system, and a detector located either at the proximal end or directly at the distal tip of the device.

Light is delivered to the tissue through fiber-optic illumination channels and the reflected light is transmitted through lenses or imaging bundles to the camera system. Polarization-based imaging techniques can significantly improve image quality in such environments. The integration of colorPol® glass polarizers enables reliable polarization control within endoscopic optical systems and contributes to improved visualization during medical examinatons.

The Integration Challenge

Endoscopic systems must combine high optical performance with extremely compact and robust mechanical design. The optical path typically includes illumination fibers, imaging optics, and detectors integrated into a very small instrument diameter. In this environment, system developers face several challenges:

• Strong specular reflections from wet biological tissue surfaces

• Reduced contrast caused by scattered light in biological media

• Limited installation space inside miniature optical assemblies

• High mechanical sensitivity of endoscopic optical components

• Strict hygiene and sterilization requirements for medical instruments

Reflections from tissue surfaces can mask important diagnostic details. For example, endoscopic images often show bright reflection spots that obscure underlying structures and complicate clinical interpretation.

If you would like to discuss your application, we look forward to hearing from you.
