Excelitas Introduces Ultra-Compact LA Series Backside-Illuminated CMOS and CCD Linear Image Sensors

New line-scan sensors deliver exceptional speed, sensitivity and precision in the smallest form factor in their class 

Pittsburgh, Pa., January 19, 2026 — Excelitas®, a leading provider of advanced, life-enriching technologies that make a difference, serving global market leaders in the life sciences, advanced industrial, next-generation semiconductor and avionics sectors, today introduced its new LA Series Backside-Illuminated CMOS and CCD Linear Image Sensors. Designed to meet the demands of high-precision optical measurement systems, the LA Series sets a new benchmark for miniaturization and performance in line-scan sensing applications. 

The LA Series of line sensors features an ultra-compact chip-scale package measuring just 8.1×1.3×0.23 mm, making them the smallest 1024-pixel line array sensor in their class. Despite the size, these sensors deliver very high quantum efficiency from 350 nm – 1100 nm, signal-to-noise ratios up to 70 dB, and line rates of up to 257,000 lines per second, supporting accurate and reliable measurements even in dynamic or low-light conditions. 

Designed for both industrial and portable platforms, the LA Series combines high signal integrity, broad spectral responsiveness, and ultra-fast readout. A standard I2C interface and on-chip correlated double sampling (CDS) support flexible acquisition modes, built-in temperature monitoring and straightforward digital integration, enabling repeatable performance while simplifying system design across precision metrology, scanning, spectroscopy and wearable sensing applications.

The LA Series is available in multiple configurations allowing designers to select the optimal pixel count, pitch and frame rate for applications including linear and rotary encoders, surface scanning, triangulation-based distance measurement, spectrometry, multi-touch displays and barcode reading.
