    Four example innovations by quantum-cascade laser companies show us where the industry is going.
    From the experimentally measured dependence of slope efficiency (a) and threshold current density (b) on QCL cavity length, the injection efficiency can be determined. Here, an injection efficiency (ηi) of 70%, waveguide losses (αw) of 1.6 cm-1, differential gain (g) of 14 cm/kA, and transparency current density (Jtr) of 1.3 kA/cm2 were determined. All but the threshold current density are parameters that can be determined from a model.
