The high-output emitter is available for only $7 per unit in volume quantities.

PULSABLE EMITTER FOR INFRARED APPLICATIONS

New technology can result in 93% cost savings compared to traditional high-output emitters

SANTA ROSA, CA - Cal Sensors announces the launch of PIRELC, a high-output emitter that can be used as a low-cost, steady state or pulsed source of blackbody radiation for near-to-far infrared applications. The solid state emitter offers high output (4x10-2 watts/cm2 at 1 in. from filament) and is available at a 93% cost savings compared to traditional high-output infrared emitters.

The PIRELC is well-suited for a variety of applications, including industrial and medical gas analysis, process control instrumentation, spectroscopy and plastics sorting. The pulsable emitter offers enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, is compatible with a wide range of detector technologies, and comes in an industry-standard T0-5 header package.

"Traditionally, high-output pulsable emitters can cost $100," explains Brian Elias, Director of Engineering at Cal Sensors. "Alternatively, design engineers could select a low IR output traditional incandescent bulb emitter for only about $1. The PIRELCis a quality, high-output emitter and is available for only $7 per unit in volume quantities. The introduction of the PIRELC means that system designers will no longer need to choose between price competitiveness and output quality when selecting infrared emitter technology."

The PIRELC was strategically designed for infrared applications. The glass bulb that surrounds a traditional incandescent bulb was removed to eliminate interference in transmitting infrared photons through glass. Cal Sensors then developed a special ultra-thin metallic foil filament configured for direct radiation out of the package. The foil material has an emissivity of 0.88 and closely emulates a blackbody source in spectral distribution. The PIRELC provides an infrared output that is at least 30% greater than that of traditional incandescent bulbs, and is designed to operate at a rated maximum foil temperature of 1000 K for wavelengths of 2.9 microns and beyond.

The PIRELC can be operated in both steady state and pulsed modes. The pulsed mode operation provides a low frequency source of modulated infrared energy for detectors, such as pyroelectrics, that require a modulated source. The emitter can be pulsed to 10Hz with 50% modulation depth which matches well to the requirements of thermal and other detector materials.

The PIRELC is part of a new family of PIRE pulsable emitters that Cal Sensors officially launched at booth 523 of the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) held March 24-26 in San Diego, CA. In addition to the PIRELC (which stands for "pulsable infrared emitter, low cost), Cal Sensors launched the PIRES pulsable infrared emitter and the PIREHS high-frequency pulsable emitter.
