June 9, 2009--VI Systems GmbH (Berlin, Germany), provider of ultra-high speed optical components for data communications, will participate in the Eurostars "Optical Link" project that aims to develop a new generation of ultrahigh-bandwidth fiber-optic data communication interconnects. Higher-speed interconnects and integrated photonics are seen as a necessity in the future of optical computing (see "Can optical integration solve the computational bottleneck?").

The interconnects are for advanced applications including computer links such as USB 4.0 and related interfaces, PCI Express upgrades, and other vital solutions for short-reach data transfer such as future HDMI cables for audio and video signals.

VI Systems GmbH will contribute primarily by developing reliable advanced ultrahigh speed single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and photodetector solutions and by performing technology integration services wherein VI Systems' optoelectronic devices are combined with photonic integrated circuits (ICs) and silicon germanide (SiGe)-based BiCMOS ICs, and finally assembled into fully packaged active optical cables.

VI Systems and their Optical Link partners will develop new low-cost technology for optical cables by merging fast micro-lasers and detectors with integrated photonic and electronic circuits to enable ultra-high-speed data exchange between digital computers, peripherals, and consumer products.

The project is funded and managed by the Eurostars Program, a joint initiative of Eureka and the European Community with a duration of 24 months starting on July 1st 2009. The partners include: Tyco Electronics Nederland BV (Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands), LioniX BV (Enschede, The Netherlands), the Fraunhofer IZM (Berlin, Germany), and IHP GmbH - Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics (Frankfurt/Oder, Germany).

VI Systems GmbH is a fabless developer and manufacturing company of optoelectronic components for communications, industrial and consumer applications based in Berlin, Germany. Originally spun-out of the Technical University of Berlin and the A. F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, VI-Systems GmbH offers laser and photodetector semiconductor chips and modules for applications in optical data communications and related consumer markets.
