EPIC Workshop on Biophotonics to address opportunities, challenges

The European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC; Paris, France) Workshop on Biophotonics, to be held in Paris as part of the OPTO 2012 conference on October 25, will aim to determine opportunities and challenges for biophotonics business development for the next 5 years. Of particular focus will be applications for Raman-based, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and related evanescent-field sensors.

The workshop, with a Health, Safety and Environment theme, will look at indoor air quality and food and water safety. Compact, low-cost Raman sensors are promising for monitoring quality of air, food, and water in many settings, and the workshop will address requirements that may need to be met in order to implement widespread deployment within 5 years.

Also, a Personalized Medicine focus will look at the concurrent development of companion diagnostics to screen and monitor patients during treatment. Last year, the FDA announced that a new drug will only be allowed on the market if it can be proven to be effective for the particular patient based on a screening test. So, SPR and other evanescent-wave sensors are good candidates to address this application.

Participants are encouraged to prepare and present posters describing exploitable photonics technology breakthroughs, innovative photonics sensors and systems, and novel approaches to sensing, imaging, and diagnostics through biophotonics.
