Clinical 'smart glasses' use multispectral light, ultrasound for deep-tissue vascular imaging

New smart glasses offer clinicians a point-of-care wearable ultrasound system for deep-tissue vascular imaging.

Medical imaging devices developer Evena Medical has launched its Eyes-On Glasses 3.0--smart glasses that offer clinicians a point-of-care wearable ultrasound system for deep-tissue vascular imaging.

The Eyes-On device's design incorporates multispectral imaging and wireless connectivity to deliver clear, anatomically accurate, real-time vascular imaging in a wearable, hands- and cart-free system. With the device, the company's DeepVu ultrasound can be deployed for viewing deep tissue vascular images such as the femoral vein and artery. Augmented reality capabilities are also now available on the new platform, enabling digital overlays during medical training.

“Venipuncture is the most common invasive medical procedure, yet studies have shown that up to 40% of IV starts require multiple attempts to locate and access a vein, which not only wastes valuable nursing time but also delays therapy and causes patient discomfort and dissatisfaction,” explains Frank Ball, Evena Medical's president and CEO. The device, Ball adds, allows nurses in clinical environments—including pediatric or neonatal units—to quickly and easily locate and access the best veins for each patient.

Attendees at the Medica conference (November 16-19, 2015; Düsseldorf, Germany) were able to try out the device.
