OCT shows potential in measuring bladder cancer tumor grade

Research presented recently examined the potential use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in determining tumor grade in bladder urothelial carcinoma.

Research presented recently examined the potential use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in determining tumor grade in bladder urothelial carcinoma. In the ex-vivo study, the authors compared OCT grading to standard histopathologic grading of human bladder tissue specimens. And although the authors could not demonstrate a quantitative difference between benign tissue and malignant tissue of various grades on OCT analysis (p=0.732), the inter-observer agreement on OCT was much better than on histopathology. Although larger scale studies are required to further delineate the full potential of OCT, the use of such technologies to improve treatment algorithms for bladder cancer is exciting.

The findings were presented at the World Congress of Endourology (WCE) 28th Annual Meeting, which was held September 1 - 4 in Chicago.
