NOVEMBER 11, 2008 -- Canon USA (Lake Success, NY) is showcasing what it calls its "complete line of total digital imaging and workflow management solutions for eyecare professionals" this week at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting (November 7 – 11, Atlanta, GA).

In particular, Canon is demonstrating the synergy between its own retinal camera systems and optical coherence tomography (OCT) products from Optopol Technology SA (Zawiercie, Poland). The SPOCT HR, currently awaiting FDA clearance, promises superior resolution among available OCT systems, ultrahigh scanning speed to shorten data collection, and improved comfort during the examination for both the patient and the operator.

The SPOCT enables true, non-invasive cross-sectional imaging of the retina for 3D viewing. Canon is also demonstrating Optopol's automated perimeter PTS 1000 a diagnostic instrument that offers precise and fast testing of the field of vision (the system requires FDA product listing and is not for sale or lease in the US). The PTS 1000 features a wide range of strategies and analysis tools combined with intuitive interface.

Canon's line of digital imaging solutions for the ophthalmic world also includes:

+ CF-1 Mydriatic Digital Retinal Camera -- When attached to a Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera (sold separately), the CF-1 can deliver clear and detailed diagnostic images for virtually immediate review. It boasts exceptional ease of use; an ergonomic, streamlined design motorizes procedures usually performed by hand. The new compact design allows for close interaction with the patient and easy access to the patient's eyes.

+ CR-1 Non-Mydriatic Digital Retinal Camera -- Introduced in April, the CR-1 features a redesigned optical system for extremely detailed, high-resolution diagnostic images of the retina and a 45-degree view angle. When attached to a Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera (sold separately), which provides up to 10.1 million pixel resolution, the CR-1 can deliver images almost immediately. One-hand joystick operation and an illuminated operation panel enable one-handed operation in dark rooms, while a shorter working distance allows for close interaction with the patient and easy access to the patient's eyes.

+ RK-F1 Full Auto Ref-Keratometer -- Canon says it invented the first auto ref-keratometer; the RK-F1 is designed for easy operation and full automatic alignment for refractometry and keratometry.

+ TX-F Full Auto Tonometer – Using innovative Canon Full Automatic technology and its 3D tracking system, the TX-F Tonometer allows doctors to perform simple eye exams efficiently and reliably.

"Ever since developing the world's first non-mydriatic retinal camera in 1976, Canon has been a pioneer and leader in the field of retinal imaging," said Tsuneo Imai, senior director and general manager, Medical Systems Division, Canon U.S.A.
