NOVEMBER 10, 2008 -- Carl Zeiss Meditec (Dublin, CA) is announcing new and updated technology at this week's American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting (November 7-11, Atlanta, GA). Zeiss's new systems include diagnostic and surgical applications covering the entire spectrum of patient care and supporting all major segments of ophthalmology, including cataract/refractive, retina and glaucoma. Technologies include coaxial illumination, photocoagulation, optical coherence tomography, femtosecond lasers, and intraocular lenses (IOLs).
The company is introducing two new systems:
+ The new OPMI Lumera i Surgical Microscope offers the same patented Stereo Coaxial Illumination (SCI) as the OPMI Lumera, introduced last year, with the addition of integrated workflow efficiencies designed for the operating room: A touch-screen control panel, integrated camera control and an ergonomic foot pedal.
+ Zeiss says its VISULAS Trion Combi System is the world's first multi-color photocoagulator paired with a photodisruptor to offer the complete treatment solution for the retina practice. Using yellow, red and green wavelengths, surgeons can perform a variety of retinal procedures with the added capability to perform iritdotomies with the companion YAG laser.
In addition, Carl Zeiss Meditec is showcasing several recent innovations for its Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and IOLMaster Biometry systems. Stratus OCT and Cirrus HD-OCT collectively reached a milestone of 10,000 placements worldwide in September, and the IOLMaster similarly reached a landmark 10,000 installations this month. The advancements are designed to improve the scalability and clinical applications of these products.
+ Cirrus HD-OCT Review Software brings the capabilities of Cirrus HD-OCT analysis to the exam lane. To streamline office workflow, this new software enables dynamic viewing of images and analyses at a remote location, such as a laptop or personal computer. Additional applications in development for OCT will be previewed in the New Technology area of the exhibition booth.
+ IOLMaster Advanced Technology Software Version 5 offers a new composite axial length algorithm that increases the number of patients that can be measured for intraocular lenses (IOLs), including those suffering from dense, opaque cataracts and those who have undergone hyperopic laser vision correction.
Key refractive solutions at this year's meeting include the VisuMax Femtosecond System and MEL 80 for laser vision correction as well as the Acri.LISAtoric multifocal intraocular lenses for refractive cataract surgery.
+ Zeiss reports that its VisuMax Femtosecond System and the MEL 80 excimer laser are achieving excellent outcomes at three Centers of Excellence within the United States, including Baskin-Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL, Discover Vision Center in Kansas City, MO and Dishler Laser Institute in Greenwood Village, CO.
+ Acri.LISAtoric, which Zeiss says is the world's only multifocal toric MICS IOL, was launched at ESCRS 2008 and is debut in the U.S. at AAO. An international multi-center study is currently underway at approximately 20 centers throughout the UK, Europe and Asia. The Acri.LISAtoric is based on the well-known optical concept of the Acri.LISA which has shown in studies that the vast majority of patients, in some studies more than 90% of the patients, no longer need corrective glasses at all after cataract surgery. The Acri.LISAtoric is not approved for sale in the U.S.
Carl Zeiss Meditec's connectivity solution, featuring the VISUPAC Star and DICOM Gateway image and report management solution, will be previewed as well. The VISUPAC Star offers centralized storage for test reports and clinical images generated by the clinic's diagnostic instruments. It also provides a new patient scheduler feature which eliminates the need for typing patient information into each diagnostic instrument, thereby saving time and preventing charting errors.
