Biophotonics has posed itself as one of the fastest growing fields of interest. To meet this demand, the Photonex 2011 show, to be held October 18–19, 2011, in Coventry, England, will cover sensing, analytical techniques and photonics in healthcare.
Professor Duncan Graham, a researcher in sensor technology based at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, Scotland), will chair the program, and will talk about the application of Raman scattering to study functionalized metallic nanoparticles to aid in disease diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Pete Tomlins from the Center for Diagnostic and Oral Sciences at the University of London (London, England) will co-chair the program, and will present his work in applying optical coherence tomography (OCT) to understand how light interacts with human tissue and to determine the diagnostic value of different optical parameters.
Also, instrumentation companies such as Agilent, Bruker, JPK, and Ocean Optics will talk about how they have developed new tools for characterizing optical processes while academics will discuss how they are investigating practical solutions to a broad range of medical and biological problems. And the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE; London, England) will demonstrate how the health industry evaluates new devices and technologies for use within the National Health Service (NHS), which underscores the value of biophotonics as a whole.
