Falling on the heels of last week's FDA approval news for the company's iVue database tool, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) system maker Optovue (Fremont, CA) has also received approval to market its iCam non-mydriatic color fundus camera. The camera produces 45° color fundus images of the eye as well as external ocular structures for various eye pathologies. To do this, it uses a 12 bit CCD sensor to provide deep, rich colors with low noise and an LED light source to reduce peak light energy to the eye.

Addtional features of the camera include joystick control, focusing and positioning aids to expedite the photography process, and a user interface that enables image review and electronic medical record (EMR) communication.

The camera debuted at the Annual Heart of America Contact Lens Society meeting, held February 15–17, 2013, in Kansas City, MO, and is scheduled for release to the US market in early Q2, followed by a global release.
