Focal Point (Boise, ID) and Piezosystem Jena (Hopedale, MA), autofocus systems and nanopositioning solutions makers, respectively, have entered into a new partnership to deliver autofocus systems for bioimaging applications. Focal Point's experience in semiconductor and printing technology applications, coupled with Piezosystem Jena's super-resolution microscopy knowledge, will open up new possibilites in biological research, says Jim Litynski, CEO of Piezosystem Jena.

The effects of thermal drift on systems are becoming increasingly important since the advent of super-resolution microscopes and the introduction of complex imaging techniques for biology, which require nanometer-scale stability between sample and lens. The market calls for systems insensitive to tilt and diffraction effects often common in industrial settings, and the two companies will be releasing more improvements in focus measurement and control technology in the near future, says Dan Marshall, CTO of Focal Point.

The partnership will also serve high-speed metrology applications.
