Ophthalmic surgeon Ike K. Ahmed, MD, performed the first complex cataract surgery in Canada using the TrueVision (Mississauga, ON, Canada) 3D Surgical System. The surgery, performed at Trillium Health Partners – Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, used the TrueVision platform for high-definition, real-time, stereoscopic microsurgery.

Ahmed says that using the platform provided distinct advantages in visualization and ergonomics in micro-invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS). “Critical to the procedure is the ability to visualize the angle, in a comfortable, ergonomic way,” he explains. "As well as being able to place those devices appropriately in those small spaces, we typically have to tilt the head of the patient and flip the microscope."

What's more, use of the system allowed Ahmed to perform the day's surgeries comfortably. “Toward the end of the day I was quite relaxed, sitting back in my chair and operating, rather than the typical sitting-forward, muscles tight, and neck cranked around on the scope,” he says.
