Lighting up innovative optical fiber applications

June 1, 2019
A new type of light source is needed for the small-diameter fiber-based illumination systems that are enabling leading-edge biomedical applications.

Fiber-coupling of LEDs depends on emitter type

Oct. 1, 2004
Approaches differ for coupling edge- and surface-emitting LEDs into optical fiber, and the Lagrange invariant plays an important role in designing fiber-coupling optics.
Gradient-index microlens shapes diode-array output, producing elliptical beams (near-field). The short (vertical) axes equal the diameter of the gradient-index core; without additional optical elements the beams would overlap in the horizontal plane (far-field).
