Jenoptik receives $7.3M order from Rheinmetall

Jena, Germany--The Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems division has received an order worth $7.3 million from Rheinmetall for 62 thermal imaging target acquisition systems and more than 300 laser rangefinders.

Jena, Germany--The Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems division has received an order worth $7.3 million from Rheinmetall (Kiel, Germany) for 62 thermal imaging target acquisition systems from the NYXUS BIRD series by the end of the first half of 2013. NYXUS BIRD is a multifunctional system that combines a number of components for military surveillance. The 1.5 kg handheld system comprises a thermal imager, rangefinder, GPS, and digital compass, among other features. It combines day vision and infrared optics to enable use in both daylight and complete darkness.

The systems are integrated into the GLADIUS program, which involves upgrading the equipment used by the German Armed Forces. Until the start of 2013, the GLADIUS program was run under the name "Future soldier – extended system."

The order also includes the delivery of more than 300 laser rangefinders over a 3-year period. The ELEM series (Erbium Laser Rangefinder) measuring equipment is designed for use in multi-sensor platforms and fire control systems.
