The OSA Foundation (OSAF) (Washington, DC) has announced that Matthew N. Barnum of the University of Arizona and Anthony J. Visconti of the University of Rochester are the recipients of the 2012 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grant. The grant was established by Optical Research Associates (ORA®), now the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys, Inc., as a memorial to ORA’s former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert. The grant recognizes the research excellence of graduate students in the areas of optical engineering, lens design, and/or illumination design.

Barnum and Visconti both presented papers during Topical Meetings at the Optical Society’s (OSA) Imaging and Applied Optics: OSA Optics and Photonics Congress, in Monterey, CA. Barnum presented a paper titled “Experimental Comparison of Computational Approaches to Focus Invariant Optical Systems” at the Computational Optical Sensing and Imaging Meeting (COSI). Visconti presented “Large Diameter Radial Gradient-Index Lenses Fabricated by Ion Exchange” at the Imaging Systems and Applications Meeting (IS).

The Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grants are awarded to students presenting at the Imaging and Applied Optics Congress or OSA’s annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO). Barnum and Visconti were selected by program chairs from COSI, IS and the Optical Sensors Topical Meeting (SENSORS).
