UC Irvine to offer optical engineering and instrument design courses, webinars

Irvine, CA--The University of California, Irvine will host two free webinars as well as two new online courses during its fall quarter that cater to optical engineering and optical system design.

Irvine, CA--Irvine, CA--The University of California, Irvine will host two free webinars as well as two new online courses during its fall quarter that cater to optical engineering and optical system design. Students and professionals in industries including defense, medical, clean energy, nanotechnology, automotive, electronics, communications, entertainment, computers, and consumer products will benefit from these fall offerings, which are part of the Optical Engineering and Optical Instrument Design Certificate Programs.

Webinar: Optical Systems Engineering: It’s Not Just the Optics—This free webinar will provide participants with information on the upcoming Optical Systems Engineering course. Topics will include first-order, system-level estimates of optical performance, with a focus on radiometry, sources, detectors and focal plane arrays (FPAs), optomechanics, and the integration of these topics for developing a complete optical system. The webinar will be held on August 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT.

Webinar: Optical Engineering and Optical Instrument Design: Education Planning Session—The free webinar will give participants insight into the growing demand for optical professionals, along with a discussion about current industry trends. The webinar will be held on September 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT.

Course: Optical Systems Engineering—This new online course will be held September 24 through December 9, and will provide students with the fundamentals of systems engineering as applied to the design of optical infrared and laser systems. The course instructor is Keith Kasunic, Ph.D., a technical director at Optical Systems Group who has more than 25 years of experience in developing optical, electro-optical, infrared, and laser systems.

Course: Introduction to Vibration Control—This online course will discuss ways in which vibrations may affect optical performance, principal methods of vibration control, vibration measurements, and environmental standards. The course will be held October 22 through November 25. The course instructor, Slava Ryaboy, Ph.D., is the principal engineer of vibration control product development at Newport Corporation (also in Irvine).
