IEEE Photonics Society to launch Women in Photonics initiative at annual meeting

IEEE Photonics Conference will be held in San Diego (October 12-16) and feature a special networking event to celebrate the launch of the IEEE Photonics Society’s Women in Photonics initiative as well as the 20th anniversary of IEEE Women in Engineering.  

The IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) will be held in San Diego, October 12-16, and feature a special networking event to celebrate the launch of the IEEE Photonics Society’s (IPS) Women in Photonics initiative as well as the 20th anniversary of IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE).

Consistent with the IEEE WIE’s mission of facilitating the global recruitment and retention of women in engineering and STEM, the goal of the Women in Photonics program is to create and promote activities that support the participation, engagement, and advancement of women in the photonics and optics community. The evening event is intened to offer an inclusive networking environment for members and to diversify the spirit of photonics innovation and collaboration.

The IPC this year features plenary talks by John Bowers, UC Santa Barbara, on hybrid silicon PICs; Toshio Yanagida, Osaka University, on single molecule imaging and nanometry; Peter Knight, Imperial College London, on exploiting quantum coherence for new technologies; and Kerry Vahala, California Institute of Technology, on the future of optical microcavity research. Special symposium will focus on: Optoelectronic Devices for Solar Energy Harvesting, High Power Diode Lasers and Systems, and Optomechanics.

Conard Holton

Conard Holton has 25 years of science and technology editing and writing experience. He was formerly a staff member and consultant for government agencies such as the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the International Atomic Energy Agency, and engineering companies such as Bechtel. He joined Laser Focus World in 1997 as senior editor, becoming editor in chief of WDM Solutions, which he founded in 1999.
