Optoelectronics gains competitive ground

The laser and optoelectronics industries are more competitive internationally today than they were five years ago, according to a new report issued by the Council on Competitiveness (Washington, DC). In 1991, the council issued a clarion call to industry and government about the technological position of US industry compared to other countries, warning that America was weak or losing in onethird of 94 crucial technologies. The report helped galvanize efforts to restore the US technological edge.
