Potassium niobate broadens microlaser potential

In a demonstration of compact green-laser output, Virgo Optics (Port Richey, FL) has optically contacted a 0.5-mm-thick chi¥of neodymium-doped vanadate (Nd:YVO4) with a 1.5-mm potassium niobate (KNbO3) crystal, forming a laser cavity. Before mating the index-matched, highly parallel materials, each is coated on the nonmating side for high reflectivity at the fundamental wavelength and high transmission of the visible and diode-pum¥wavelengths.
