LIOS and Opsens partner on downhole fiber-optic pressure, temperature sensing

Sept. 8, 2011
Cologne, Germany--LIOS is partnering with Opsens to provide both downhole fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (DTS) and pressure monitoring capability.

Cologne, Germany--LIOS Technology GmbH has already been successful in several downhole fiber-optic sensing projects in Canada thanks in part to a long-term agreement signed with Opsens (Edmonton, AB, Canada) that combines the high-temperature fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (DTS) capability of LIOS with the fiber-optic pressure and temperature monitoring technologies from Opsens.

The benefit of this alliance is to combine complementary well-surveillance solutions and apply the advanced concept on Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) and other enhanced oil and gas recovery wells. By expanding the measurement scope and offering both pressure as well as DTS measurements in an integrated solution, customers will be able to monitor pressure and temperature at the toe of the horizontal well, in addition to temperature along the entire wellbore with sub-meter spatial resolution, resulting in a comprehensive wellbore profile that can be used for enhanced optimization and improved well management.

"We see considerable potential for LIOS distributed sensing products in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and we look forward to exploring further possibilities that this partnership between LIOS and Opsens can offer," says Gaétan Duplain, Opsens VP Oil and Gas. Thomas Oldemeyer, CEO of LIOS Technology, said, "We're exceptionally pleased to offer our products through Opsens Solutions. This partnership allows LIOS to operate in extreme harsh downhole environment and benefit of Opsens Solutions expertise in installation and completion of downhole instrumentation."

Opsens is a developer, manufacturer, and supplier of a wide range of fiber optic sensors and associated signal conditioners based on proprietary patented and patent-pending technologies. Opsens sensors measure pressure, temperature, strain, and displacement to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and end-users in the oil and gas, medical, and laboratory fields.

LIOS Technology develops and supplies frequency domain based distributed temperature monitoring systems and is wholly owned by the Danish industrial conglomerate NKT Holding A/S.
