Plastic optical fiber passes 2.5Gbit/s test

Highspeed data has been transmitted at a rate of 2.5 Gbit/s in plastic optical fiber by collab orating scientists at NEC (Tokyo, Japan) and Keio University (Tokyo, Japan). Because conventional stepindex plastic fiber is limited to a bandwidth not exceeding 5 MHz, the researchers needed to develo¥a gradedindexprofile plastic fiber that extended its bandwidth to the multigigabit range.
